DNN is a great platform, and it continues to evolve as both the technology evolves and its owners/caretakers learn more and improve the system. Both these are important to site owners. The evolution means that better resource use is available making sites run better and faster with less load on a server. The experience becomes better for the end user and the site owner becomes more successful in their chosen endeavor.
Recently one of my great challenges has been a series of modules built for booking parties. The modules are built well enough but the site itself has languished back in DNN 4.5. The modulkes themselves have some specific requirements for .NET 2.0 and everything has defied upgrades in the DNN platform. If the site owner had spent a bit of time in the past few years having the site brought up to current levels in DNN most of the issues in the module would have been found and handled when they were not a crisis. As it stands now the site owner is having to not only pay to have DNN brought up and tested through 5 or 6 versions of DNN but the time it takes to test and fix the custom modules as well and is facing the prospect of losing a customer (lets hope that doesn't happen)
The moral of the story is upgrade as DNN is released and stable and address 3rd party module problems early for a little money or wait till the coming disaster is upon you and scramble to fix everything for a lot of money all at once, both in support and lost business. This cost does not even begin to address security issues that are fixed on a regular basis and functionality that may not work in older versions.
